Remembering Sherm Lollar and the Go-Go Sox with Pete Lollar

Sherm Lollar is often overlooked in baseball history, but as Chuck Garfien reveals in this conversation with Lollar’s son Pete, he may very well be the greatest catcher in White Sox history. Pete shares stories about growing up around the White Sox of the 1950s, what made his father such a special player and person, and what baseball was really like in that era—from catching Luis Aparicio batting practice to watching his dad catch Hoyt Wilhelm’s knuckleball.

I just listened to your Sherm Lollar podcast with Sherm’s son Pete. He mentioned that they’d rent a house during the season. One year he lived on Elmwood Avenue in LaGrange Park, which was in my neighborhood. On at least one occasion I played street baseball with Sherm’s kids. I’m two years older than Pete but it’s likely he was one I played ball with. A highlight of the memory is Sherm coming out on the porch to call them in for dinner. I was awe-stricken.
